Balance Needed on Truck Traffic in Yarraville
Monday 25 February 2008
Some Balance Please

Truck drivers are not Public Enemy No 1.

They work hard to deliver goods and services to the community. Simply stated they drive the economy.

Truck drivers are also family people and the bulk of them live in the western suburbs.

They have no interest in harming the people or the communities in which they live.

Truck drivers are also responsible. They empowered the Union some years ago to agree to truck restrictions on Somerville Road, Yarraville provided unrestricted access remained for Francis Street.

Subsequently, following another approach from the local council,  night time and weekend curfews were agreed for Francis Street.

Now we have the clamour for a total ban, an impossible request. (Let’s not forget that the official designation for Francis St is Docklands Highway, so it has always been a major freight route).

The Union challenges the claims being advanced regarding truck numbers, pollution and activity.

Many of the trucks entering and leaving the area are on legitimate local business.

The Union continues to support the Francis Street curfew and urges drivers to respect it. If it is not adequately policed, that is a matter for the authorities.

Its time for some balance to be brought to the issue.
