TWU backs State Budget spending on transportThe Transport Workers Union has welcomed the Brumby Government’s commitment to transport infrastructure in the Victorian Budget announced today.
TWU Vic/Tas Branch Secretary Bill Noonan said that the state’s booming economy and population growth had put great pressure on the transport system, both for passengers and freight.
“I am pleased to see that the government is prepared to think big and commit the huge resources that will be needed in coming years.”
Mr. Noonan said that the government’s emphasis on outer suburban and regional areas was welcome, especially with the provision of extra bus services.
“From the point of view of our members, we must work to ensure that new road projects take into account safety considerations, especially with the provision of adequate rest facilities.”
“The next challenge will be the consideration of the proposals in the Eddington Report to unjam Melbourne’s inner-city traffic.”
