The Federal Government Pledges Funding for the Nagambie BypassTransport was a big winner in the 2008 Federal Budget. The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has shown a strong commitment to improving transport infrastructure, particularly in Victoria.
The Federal Government is committing $20 billion to road funding investment. $51 million in roads projects will be fast-tracked in Victoria, and overall Victoria has won $497 million of the $3.2 billion earmarked for national roads and rail projects.
Projects such as improvements to the West Gate Bridge, the Geelong Ring Road extension, boosting the capacity of the Western Ring Road and important road duplications in regional Victoria will improve the movement of freight.
The Union is particularly pleased about the funding allocated to eliminating 55 road blackspots and specific funding for the Nagambie bypass project.
The Nagambie by-pass is another part of the Goulburn Valley Highway upgrade that the Union has been fighting for over more than a decade and will do much to improve both efficiency and safety on a key freight route.
The national freight task is growing at a rate of 3 per cent annually, translating into a 50 per cent increase by 2020.
The Union will continue to lobby the Victorian and Federal Governments for more roadside truck stops and improvements to some existing stops. Truck drivers driving long distances rely on these truck stops for their scheduled rest breaks. Driver fatigue management laws starting in September 2008 will compel drivers to stop more frequently, highlighting the issue of inadequate rest stops even further.
