TWU does not support owner driver blockade
Monday 21 July 2008
The TWU does not endorse the blockade being threatened by some owner drivers on Monday, 28th July 2008.

All Branches of the TWU have endorsed a set of recommended published rates for owner drivers. Owner drivers are encouraged to negotiate rates and conditions with their company or hirer, and can nominate the Union as an appointed negotiating agent.

The new Owner Driver and Forestry Contractors Act (Vic) 2005 creates historic opportunities for owner drivers to benefi t from collective bargaining and Union representation. It protects Owner Drivers from making uninformed financial decisions and prohibits unfair conduct.

The Union has called on owner drivers in the road transport industry to demand fuel levies from road transport operators to counter soaring fuel costs. Cost recovery is a critical factor in road safety. The service and maintenance of trucks is expensive and there is a danger that safety maintenance measures could suffer if owner driver incomes are adversely affected.

The Union’s recent safe rates campaign, which resulted in a win for excavation tippers, shows the way for all owner drivers. The Union does not support the actions of this fringe owner driver group and encourages members to discuss their concerns with a Union representative.
