TWU supports Eddington Truck Action Plan and staged construction of tunnelThe East West Link Needs Assessment (EWLNA) and the Eddington Report represent a once in a generation opportunity to meet the present and future transport challenges facing Melbourne, particularly in the East-West corridor.
Roads are a vital community resource with significant economic value and they should be maintained to a level able to support a world-class transport system. It is time for government and transport industry stakeholders to realign their thinking on transport regulation, policy and planning.
“The growth forecast for freight over the next two decades means that we must think about infrastructure capacity and act on constraints now. Our roads and ports must keep pace with this forecast growth, or the economy and jobs will suffer,” said Bill Noonan, Branch Secretary.
The TWU supports the suggested elevated road from Hyde Street in Yarraville (near Stony Creek backwash) on to the Westgate Freeway as outlined in the truck action plan, alleviating the pressure of truck movements in the Yarraville area.
In terms of the new east-west road connection, the TWU supports a reduced reliance on the Westgate Bridge /Freeway by planning the staged construction of a new 18-kilometre cross city road tunnel from the Western Ring Road to the Eastern Freeway.
Mr. Noonan said “the implementation of recommendations in the EWLNA, in conjunction with the adoption of the National Transport Commission’s “New Beginning for Transport,” was essential to meeting the infrastructure needs of our state over the coming years.”
“We have a responsibility to ensure existing networks function more effectively while planning continues for major projects. The projects outlined in the report are fundamental to the on-going health of the Victorian transport industry and economy,” said Mr. Noonan.
