Slow down for road workers
Friday 17 October 2008
The Union has been contacted by VicRoads regarding trucks speeding in road construction zones.

Specific problems are occurring at night-time in construction zones along the M1, where major works are under way on several sections of the road from the West Gate Bridge all the way through to Heatherton Road.

The project necessitates quite a lot of vehicle traffic entering and exiting sites after normal hours when drivers of passing vehicles might not expect it.

Workers who are obliged to set up and dismantle traffic management devices at night have expressed concerns for their safety.

These are fellow workers going about their jobs and should be able to do so without fearing for their lives.

You may be confident that you are in full control of the vehicle, even if you are exceeding the speed limit, but you can’t expect roadside workers to share that confidence.

The limits are there to allow roadside workers to do their jobs in safety and should be respected.
