Goulburn Valley Highway Upgrade - Nagambie Bypass
Thursday 27 November 2008
The Goulburn Valley Highway is an important transport route, forming part of the national highway link between Melbourne and Brisbane.  The Nagambie Bypass is the next stage of the upgrade of the Goulburn Valley Highway.

The Nagambie Bypass will extend the four-lane freeway route for 17 km to the east of Nagambie from Mitchellstown Road to Weir Road.  The completion of the Bypass will enable drivers to travel on a freeway-standard road for 155 km from Melbourne to south of Shepparton.

The benefits of the Nagambie Bypass project include:
  • greater efficiency in the movement of freight from the Goulburn Valley to domestic and export markets, including travel times and lower transport costs;
  • easier access for residents and tourist to the Nagambie township;
  • safer conditions due to reduced traffic; and
  • greater local amenity.
The TWU is an active member of the Goulburn Valley Highway Action Group.  Bill Noonan and Daryl Coghill from the Union attended a community meeting held in Nagambie on the 27th of November.  Representatives from VicRoads outlined the current status of the project at this meeting.  $5 million has been provided by the Federal Government to progress planning and pre-construction of the Bypass, however the commencement of major construction is subject to future funding.

However, given that the Union has been pursuing the duplication of the Goulburn Valley Highway between Seymour and Shepparton since 1998, it is pleasing that we are now talking about construction detail rather than if the Bypass will be built.

The Union will continue to press the issue and will keep members informed as arrangements for the Nagambie Bypass develop.
