TWU has safety concerns on extra West Gate lanesThe Transport Workers Union has expressed concerns about the State Government’s proposal to create extra lanes on the West Gate Bridge by narrowing the existing lanes.
TWU Vic/Tas Branch Secretary Bill Noonan said today that he was especially concerned about the amount of leeway available between vehicles given the strong winds that are common on the bridge.
“Given that this proposal cannot be implemented until the bridge’s shoulders are strengthened, there should be time for a proper process of consultation to take place”, he said. “The strengthening needs to be done in any case.”
“The proposal for a contra flow of traffic as currently occurs on the Sydney Harbour Bridge would require a lot of work to ensure safety, but it may still be a more viable and safer option than narrowing lanes”, said Mr. Noonan.
