Good day for transport workersThe Transport Workers Union has welcomed today’s State Government’s announcements re future plans for Victoria’s transport infrastructure.
TWU Vic/Tas Branch Secretary Bill Noonan said today that he was pleased to see the government painting on a broad canvas.
“The challenges we face require big thinking and bold actions,” Mr. Noonan said. “The days when some people saw Victoria as a stagnant, rust-bucket state are long gone. Now we have to make sure that our infrastructure can keep up.”
“We are particularly pleased to see the two-pronged proposal to clear the transport tangle around the waterfront with the road tunnel under Footscray and the new direct link between the port and the West Gate Freeway. This will be welcomed by drivers and residents alike.”
Mr. Noonan also supported the proposal to provide a link between the Ring Road and the Eastern Freeway and the extra resources put into rail and bus transport.
“We don’t have the luxury of fighting over the best modes of transport,” he said. “Both road and rail have a big role to play in our state’s future.”
