Funding for the Nagambie Bypass earmarked
Wednesday 17 December 2008
Regional and rural roads in Victoria form an important link between country communities and other regional centres and the city, boosting the economy and creating employment opportunities.

The Hon. Tim Pallas, the Victorian Minister for Roads and Ports, has announced that he will be working with the Federal Government to ensure that the Nagambie Bypass is constructed. The efforts of the Union and the Goulburn Valley Highway Action Group were critical to securing support for this project.

The Federal Government has committed to deliver more than $4 billion of AusLink 2 projects in partnership with the Victorian Government, including $5 million in 2008/2009 towards preconstruction and planning work on the Nagambie Bypass.

The total Federal Government commitment to the project will be $216 million.  Construction on the Bypass is expected to commence in 2010.

The benefits of the Nagambie Bypass project include:
  • greater efficiency in the movement of freight from the Goulburn Valley to domestic and export markets, including travel times and lower transport costs;
  • easier access for residents and tourists to the Nagambie township;
  • safer conditions due to reduced traffic; and
  • greater local amenity.

The Union will continue to work with the Goulburn Valley Highway Action Group and the Victorian and Federal Governments’  to ensure that the Nagambie Bypass is constructed.
