TWU welcomes Infrastructure Australia's proposed investment in transportThe Union welcomes a report released by Infrastructure Australia outlining its immediate and future transport investment priorities for the nation.
Infrastructure Australia’s December 2008 Report to the Council of Australian Governments highlights freight, public transport and road projects that it believes should receive the highest priority.
Bill Noonan, TWU (Vic/Tas) Branch Secretary said, “Transport and the movement of freight play a critical role in our economy. We need to face the significant challenges of growth forecasts in the freight task and congestion. Investment in key freight initiatives will boost jobs and further strengthen our economy.”
The road tunnel from Geelong Road to the Port of Melbourne, an alternative to the West Gate, has been earmarked for priority. This project has an approximate capital cost of $3.5 billion.
“An alternative to the West Gate Bridge is needed to cater for the expected growth in Melbourne’s western suburbs and the Port of Melbourne. Creating an alternative to the West Gate Bridge will not only improve the efficiency of freight movements, it will improve the amenity of the inner west by removing trucks from suburban roads.” said Mr. Noonan.
Other projects set aside for priority include the Green Triangle project in South Western Victoria, Donnybrook Intermodal Hub, the North East Connector Road and the Mornington Peninsula Connector Road.
Mr. Noonan said, “I welcome the strong commitment shown by the Brumby and Rudd Governments to improving transport infrastructure and ensuring that our road networks have the capacity to deliver for the economy and the community.”
