Transport Workers should not bail out employersWhilst there is much to be said about the current economic climate, the one certainty is that workers minimum wages must be protected.
The Transport Workers Union of Australia (Vic/Tas) supports the ACTU’s defence of workers.
In a growth industry that has unmet labour and skills shortages, the one thing we cannot afford is to lose current transport workers or be unable to attract new workers to deliver petrol for the cars we fill, grocery for the supermarkets we shop at and goods for the major shopping centres we purchase from.
The focus should not be on workers pay but rather the management and practices of the employers. It is unfair to attack our workers pay whilst executives are collecting an unreal pay packet.
If we want more goods delivered to our local shops, we need more workers who can feed their families, pay the bills and service their mortgages. Not leave the workforce for the dole queue as has happened in the US.
