Tough economic times drive workers to unions
Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has confirmed that workers have been joining unions in greater numbers during this period of economic and financial instability.
Bill Noonan, Branch Secretary said, “In a climate where there is much uncertainty about jobs and security, workers are better protected if they are members of a union.”
“Union members also earn on average $96 a week more than non-members. These two reasons put together make it a very good time to join a union,” said Mr. Noonan.
The ABS data shows that 56,000 members joined a union since the data was last released.
“Union membership and collective bargaining can improve job security in these tough economic times. The important message for members and non-members during this period of economic instability is that union membership is the best job security you can have,” said Mr. Noonan.
