TWU meets with Minister Graeme Sturges
Monday 20 July 2009

Bill Baarini, General Counsel (on behalf of Bill Noonan), met with The Hon. Mr Graeme Sturgess, Minister for Infrastructure on 17 July 2009.
During the meeting, Bill raised a number of important issues for the Minister and the Tasmanian government to consider:
  • Introduction of Owner Driver Legislation similar to the Victorian model. The protections provided to owner drivers by way of agreements, minimum notice periods and dispute resolution provisions were highlighted.
  • The need to provide more powers to the Tasmanian Office of Small Business Commission to receive and mediate disputes from owner drivers
  • The establishment of a Tasmanian Transport Industry Safety Group, similar to the Victorian model to provide a forum for all relevant stakeholders to tackle road safety as a whole of government, industry and community approach. I highlighted the support we have from the Tasmania Coroner for this initiative
  • The Safe Rates Campaign and the need for the Tasmanian government to support this at ATC and Commonwealth level.
The meeting was productive and the Minister assured the Union of his support of the above matters. He expressed his appreciation to the Union’s work in these areas, its leadership and its general support for his role as Minister. He extended the Union an invitation to participate in the Tasmanian Heavy Vehicle Transport Council. It was agreed that a follow up meeting would occur before the year end to ensure progress is being made.
