ABS data confirms that union membership is on the riseThe latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data on trade union membership is very positive news for unions.
Overall, union density in Australia has increased from 18.9% in 2008 to 197.7% in 2009, an increase of 82,000 union members. This increase came despite the impact of the Global Financial Crisis.
The data also shows that union members earn a pay bonus, earning on average $145 a week more than non-members. The ABS data shows a 51% increase in the union wage advantage.
Wayne Mader, Branch Secretary said, “This growth in union membership shows that the commitment to campaigning and growth is paying off, with more workers seeking the protection by joining a union.”
“The TWU is committed to protecting the rights of its members and improving their living standards through better pay and conditions,” said Mr. Mader.
