Workers can't afford the risk of an Abbott Liberal Government
Thursday 12 August 2010

The defeat of the Howard government in 2007 saved the jobs, pay and conditions of many workers. The repeal of WorkChoices removed a huge threat that was hanging over the heads of Australian workers and their families.

There is now a real chance that WorkChoices will be revived if the Abbott-led Liberal Party wins re-election on August 21st.

Workers can’t afford that risk.

Mr. Abbott says the phrase “WorkChoices” is dead. It’s not the name that matters … it’s the substance and no honeyed words and assurances will convince us that he wouldn’t try to bring it back under some other name.

Abbott’s whole record in politics shows him to be radically anti-union and pro-employer.

TWU members and their families should also remember that Prime Minister Gillard has committed herself as recently as June to legislation to secure a mechanism for achieving safe rates for transport workers.

Of course, TWU members are grown-ups and will have their own political opinions.

However, as a Union, it is our responsibility to point out the implications of this election for working people and their representative organisations.

The election of Mr. Abbott would almost certainly make it harder for Australian workers to secure decent

The defeat of the Gillard government would be a black day for Australian workers.
