Structure of Branch

The task of servicing and organising 25,000 members is substantial.  The TWU has approximately 900 Delegates and Occupational Health and Safety Representatives who assist with this task at the workplace level.

Delegates and Occupational Health and Safety Representatives are elected by members in each yard and are considered the Union’s front line troops.  Delegates provide leadership in the workplace and represent members on industrial issues.

Occupational Health and Safety Representatives are also elected by members in each yard.  OH&S representatives monitor the workplace for health and safety hazards and enforce safety standards, therefore improving safety.

Delegates and OH&S representatives receive formal TWU training to assist them in their important roles.

TWU Organisers and officials are elected by the rank and file membership every four years.  Organisers and officials service particular regions or  industries and are called into a workplace if a problem cannot be resolved by the Delegate.

The TWU Branch Secretary, also elected every four years, is responsible for all the TWU’s industrial and non-industrial services, under the guidance of the Branch Committee of Management (BCOM). The BCOM is another body elected every four years and is made up primarily of rank and file members.

The Federal Secretary is also elected every four years and is responsible for interstate disputes and matters that affect members at the national level.
